Sparked by community outrage, petitions began circulating throughout the state of New Jersey demanding the right to be made aware of sexual predators. The Kankas along with other advocates across the country, such as Marc Klaas, Patty Wetterling, John Walsh and many other victims and advocates, successfully lobbied federal lawmakers to pass the May federal version of Megan's Law. The Kanka family founded the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation to ensure that every possible step is taken to help prevent the future victimization of children.
A person who has been convicted of sexual offenses under federal or state laws can be a registered sex offender. In many cases, these defendants are required to submit their personal information, including their names and addresses, to government records, where they are kept in a database often known as a sex offender registry. Often crimes such as rape, child molestation, harassment, or other types of sexual abuse will require a defendant to register their information.

A federal judge in Colorado, Richard Matsch, has agreed with what we have been saying for a while here at Free-Range Kids: The public sex offender registry is not making kids any safer. At the same time, it is cruel and unconstitutional. The judge ruled in a case filed by three men on the registry.
